Bird Flu Facts Can Save Lives

Doctors and scientists around the world fear it may well become the next pandemic. People have died and many are concerned it’s just a matter of time before the crafty bird flu manages to spread not only from bird to human but also from human to human.

The scare level is high as scientists race to create a vaccine and reports of deaths slowly rack up. But what is the bird flu and what can be done to prevent its spread, and more importantly, protect people?

The bird flu is a strain of influenza occurs naturally in birds. Much like humans, wild birds all over the world carry viruses in their intestines, but generally don’t become sick from them. Avian influenza, however, is different and can make some birds, including chickens, ducks and turkeys quite sick and can even result in death.

While most bird viruses don’t effect humans, the latest strains have been creating problems in the human world, thus the concerns. Since 1997 there have been 100 confirmed cases of human infection with bird flu viruses.

People can become infected with bird flu through close contact with infected birds and most especially their excretions and secretions. Although the spread of the illness from one person to the next has been reported only rarely, and even then not beyond one additional person, there are many concerns in the scientific and medical communities that this will not continue. Viruses such as the flu are well known for their abilities to mutate and there’s no reason to believe that won’t be the case with this quite deadly strain of flu.

Avian flu symptoms in humans are very much like those of run-of-the-mill flu – with a wide variety found. These can include cough, sore throat, fever, eye infections, respiratory issues and other life-threatening complications.

While it’s believed the medications that can help ease the symptoms of human flu viruses might help in the case of the avian flu, there are concerns the bird virus will become resistant to these drugs, creating a bigger issue. At this time there is no vaccine for the bird flu either.

At this point, it is not believed a person can become infected with the bird flu by eating poultry or eggs. As long as safe cooking practices are followed, there should be little concern. To avoid exposure, make sure chicken and eggs are properly cooked and take care to clean up well following preparation. Washing hands and kitchen surfaces is an absolute must. Sanitary practices are a must in avoiding the bird flu and lots of other viruses and bacterial conditions as well.

Will the avian flu become the next pandemic, striking and perhaps killing thousands and thousands the world over?

Unfortunately, only time will tell. The potential, scientists fear, is absolutely there. The only way at this point for people to protect themselves is to use common sense when handling birds – either domestic or wild. Don’t eat, drink or smoke while handling birds, live or dead. Wash hands thoroughly and use caution while cooking.

As it is with so many other illnesses, the simple act of hand washing frequently and correctly can go a long way toward minimizing exposure.

Backhoe Company’s Real Secret Of Success

A history of setting industry standards by letting consumers’ expectations for product performance and concerns for safety take center stage is Case’s real claim to fame.

Inventor Jerome Case founded the company in 1842. What began as a company meant to build threshing machines has been transformed into a major manufacturer of construction equipment. The company’s longevity in a highly competitive arena reflects the success of their commitment to the industry and the consumer.

Legend details the company founder’s initial commitment to producing quality machines and setting the highest standards in customer care. In 1884, upon hearing of a Case dealer’s denial of assistance to a Minnesota farmer with a broken thresher, Jerome Case himself traveled from Racine, Wisconsin to repair the machine himself. A crowd had assembled to see the company founder attempt to repair the broken thresher. When it was found to be of such poor quality that repair was impossible, Jerome promptly doused the thresher with kerosene and set it on fire. The defective thresher was replaced with a brand new, fully functioning model the very next day.

Case started in the construction industry in the early 19th century manufacturing steamrollers and road graders. By 1886 it was the world’s largest manufacturer of steam engines. Case bought American Tractor Corp. in 1957 and merged with New Holland in 1999, forming CNH Global. Other mergers and acquisitions have taken place along the way, as Case worked towards improving the safety and capabilities of farming equipment while developing innovative construction equipment to the benefit of the industry and the consumer.

By 1967, sales in their agricultural equipment were equal to Case’s construction equipment’s performance. Separate divisions to better service each market were created through reorganization in 1968. Striving for the safest machinery designs throughout their history is another value reflected in Case’s history. In 1998, they were the first to provide ride control on backhoes and the first to offer this feature on skid steers. Today, a huge variety of Case machines are sold and serviced in over 150 countries throughout the world. .

Insistence on staying American Made reflects Case’s genuine values, and has been recognized in national and international circles. Their backhoes were listed in Fortune’s 1988 “100 Products America Makes Best.” The company designs and makes its own engines, transmissions, gears and other components.

In 1994, parent company Tenneco, Inc. began major reductions in private ownership by offering Case share sales to the public. Case became nearly 80% publicly owned by 1995. Case’s 1995 net income doubled their 1994 financial performance, soaring from $165 million to $346.

Striving for the safest machinery designs throughout their history is another value reflected in Case’s history. In 1998, they were the first to provide ride control on backhoes and the first to offer this feature on skid steers.

In a profit-driven world of outsourcing and quality compromises, the success and continued commitment of a company to its consumers’ well-being and the industry it serves is an example more should model.

Create And Enjoy A Hummingbird Paradise

The North American continent is known for its hummingbirds. Whether it’s the ruby-throated hummingbird found in the eastern portion of the continent or the 10 or so species found in the west, hummingbirds are a treat just about everyone in North America can be assured of seeing at some point in their lifetimes. For those who want to make a serious hobby out of watching these little fliers, hummingbird feeders are key.

While it’s true attracting these amazing little creatures isn’t very difficult, there are ways to better ensure success. Just like any smart animal, these little flappers are thrilled with a free meal and they don’t mind singing for it either. But if a feeder isn’t to their liking, they might not return or even land in the first place.

Bird watching, for hummers and others, is a popular pastime in the United States. With more than 800 species of birds available to watch in North America alone it’s little surprise. In fact, it’s believed that 51 million Americans enjoy the hobby to one extent or another.

Getting started watching birds is a pretty simple proposition, too. Just open your eyes! The critters are everywhere. In backyards, parks, along roadsides, in wild settings, zoos and beyond, witnessing majesty in flight is one of the easiest hobbies to get going.

If creating a backyard humming bird paradise is your desire, this is also a pretty easy proposition. Humming birds are attracted to a number of things and since they are so prevalent in the United States, it shouldn’t be difficult to create a mecca for the little fliers in a backyard of any size.

Here are some basics for attracting the birds into your yard:

Paint the town red, or at least the backyard. Hummingbirds are very attracted to anything that’s red. Buy a red feeder, a red birdbath or simply paint something in the backyard bright red. When choosing a feeder, go with those that are recommended for hummingbirds and take care to choose one that’s red in color.

Go with red flowers in your gardening scheme, tubular ones are the best, especially those that are known for their abundance of nectar.

Group flowers together in the garden. Have large patches of hummingbird attractors in a single location.

Leave old fruits outdoors to attract fruit flies. These other little fliers are favorite foods for the humming bird and where there’s food, there will be hummingbirds.

Keep plants misted with water, hummingbirds enjoy wet leaves on plants.

Create a perching area out of a bush or tree.

Concoct your own nectar using sugar water. Don’t add anything but sugar and water to the mix, even red food coloring. Or buy specialized hummingbird food, but remember the feeder first must attract the little birds, so think red!

While it’s not likely you’ll be an instant destination for hummingbirds, some careful planning of a backyard set up to attract them is likely to pay off in North America. These little birds are prevalent and easy to attract if the scheme is solid.

How to Hang a Picture Properly

Hanging a picture may seem like the simplest of all home improvement projects. While it is quite easy, there are factors like wall type and object weight that you need to consider before hammering away. If you’re a beginner or if you’ve hung pictures before but always done some in a hit or miss kind of manner, these tips will come in useful.

The first thing you need to do is purchase the right fasteners for your picture and your walls. The most common fasteners for hanging things are picture nails and hooks. While these are the most common type of fastener, they are not the most appropriate or effective ones to use in all cases.

If you are going to hang anything on a concrete, stucco or brick wall, then you should not try to use a regular nail. A concrete screw will securely anchor your object and will prevent you from chipping the wall’s surface. If you use a nail in a concrete or stucco surface, you can end up removing chunks of the wall around the nail when hammering.

If your object is heavy, then you might want to insert a plastic anchor or molly bolt-for fastening into the hole to ensure that there is no damage to your wall. Make sure that you are using the right type of fastener for your wall surface.

Once you’ve figured out the type of wall surface and the most appropriate fastener to use, you will need to decide on placement.

The first thing you want to decide is how high you want to hang the object. The basic rule of thumb is to hang pictures so that the center of the picture is at eye level. Have someone hold a tape measure against the wall and then stand back and see what number is at your eye level – that’s where the center of your picture should be.

Once you decide on the height on the wall, you need to measure the picture itself to determine the mounting height. You will then measure from the bottom of the picture to the highest point of the hanging wire. You can then figure out the hanging height by subtracting half of the picture’s height and adding the difference of the eye-height level you measured before.

Your measuring isn’t done yet though. You want to take that figure and measure that distance on the wall so you can make a mark where the bottom of the hook will hit. After you have that vertical mark, you want to measure horizontally to ensure that your picture is in the center of the space. Next you will mark where the vertical and horizontal lines cross.

Holding the faster in place, you will nail or screw the fastener into the wall. After the nail or screw is in place, you want to carefully hang the object on the wall. Make sure you are careful not to mark or scrape the wall with the frame.

Once the picture is on the hook, you should step back to see whether it is level. You can shift the picture to either the left or the right to adjust the level.

If you find (after hanging) that the picture is either too low or too high, you can adjust the wire on the back of the picture rather than making a new hole.

If you are planning on hanging multiple pictures and/or objects on one wall, then you want to plan out your measurements very carefully. Start by holding up your pictures or laying them on the floor in the pattern you want. Measure the wall space and measure each picture to ensure that you have enough space. You want to make the vertical and horizontal marks for each picture rather than just guessing. It is often easier to offset the pictures when you estimate. If you do want all of the pictures even, then you need to use a level and be really exact in your measurements. A laser level can be useful in these types of situations.

Don’t be intimidated with all of these steps if this is your first time hanging a picture. Taking your time and doing all the prep work outlined above will ensure that your picture is centered, level, and really adds character to your space.

How To Recharge Your Romance

Early in a relationship the romance factor is very high. The romance is seemingly effortless and it seems as though the romance will never fade. You may find, however, that over time the romance does fade and the relationship doesn’t seem as exciting as it did in the beginning. This is natural as a couple becomes more familiar with each other they begin to make less of an effort in the romance department. When this happens it is time for the couple to start making a conscious effort to recharge their romance.

Recreating your first date can be one way to recharge your romance. Both partners probably put a tremendous amount of effort into their first date and it was probably an incredibly romantic night for both of you. Reenacting this first date by not only returning to the sight of the first date but also putting the same effort into preparing for the date can help to recharge your romance by reminding you of how exciting your relationship was in the beginning.

Leaving your work at the office is another way to recharge your romance. If you are constantly allowing your work life to interfere with your romantic life it is time to put your romance ahead of your career. While it is okay to talk to your partner about work and how your day went, obsessing over work is not acceptable and can put out the fire in your romance rather quickly.

Giving your partners flowers or small gifts for no reason can also recharge your romance. This lets them know that you still think about them when the two of you are apart and that your love for them is always on your mind. The gifts don’t have to be expensive or extravagant but if they truly come from the heart they will help to recharge your romance.

Another way to recharge your romance is to be spontaneous. Romance often fades when a relationship becomes routine and the partners begin to take each other for granted. Spicing things up by suggesting new activities on a whim can reintroduce the romance in your relationship. Too much planning and debate about what to do or where to go can put a damper on the activity or trip before it even takes place. Excessive planning can make something seem dull while spontaneity has the opposite affect of making the activity seem more exciting.

Spending time apart can also recharge a romance. It may sound counterproductive but having your own activities and interests keeps you from becoming bored with your partner. Spending time together is very important but spending time apart is equally important because this time apart gives you the chance to grow as an individual which can enhance your relationship.

Quality time together, just like time apart, can also help to recharge your romance. You need alone time as a couple to reconnect and nurture your romance. A night out on the town for just the two of your or a quiet night alone at home can be equally effective for recharging your romance. Without this time together a couple will not have the opportunity to express themselves to their partner in a romantic way.

Incessant arguing can destroy the romance in a relationship. If you find that you and your partner are arguing constantly or over every little thing, it’s time to really evaluate the relationship and figure out why you are arguing so much. Believe it or not, you may find that this arguing is a subconscious attempt to try to recharge your romance. Arguing invokes passion and you may be trying to bring that passion into your relationship. If you find yourself doing this, it’s time to realize that the arguing is having the opposite effect and that you have to stop this unhealthy pattern. Once you realize that there are other ways to recharge a romance your arguing will subside.

Making a concerted effort to impress your partner can also recharge the romance in a relationship. As a relationship progresses there is often a sense of familiarity and comfort that emerges and results in the couple feeling as if they no longer need to try to impress their partner. They may begin to let their appearance go or stop going out of their way to please their partner. Reversing this by returning to your old ways of trying to impress your partner can go a long way in recharging romance in a relationship.

Taking a trip together can also have the effect of recharging your romance. While planning a trip may be stressful most people relax and enjoy themselves once they reach their destination. Planning a trip with your partner will give each other the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company without the worries and hassles of everyday life.

Turning off the computer for a few days can be a really simple way to recharge your romance. Many couples use their computers often to check email, search the Internet or chat with others and this time spent on the computer can really add up and begin to take time away from your partner. Time can fly when you are computing and you may find that you have wasted an entire night on your computer. You may find that if you turn the computer off for a few days, you have a lot more time to spend with your partner and the romance may naturally return to your relationship.

It is natural for romance to begin to fade if the partners begin to take each other for granted and stop trying to impress each other. Romance doesn’t exist on its own; it needs to be nurtured in a loving way in order to survive. Recharging your romance may seem like a daunting task but it really isn’t. Making an effort to spend time together, showing your partner that you care and scheduling time together and apart are all simple ways to recharge your romance.

Free Holiday Catalog Offerings Make Shopping Easy, Fun

Remember days gone by when you’d pull out a big marker or ball-point pen and circle away items in the toy catalog at Christmas time? Do you recall slowly flipping through the pages, careful to only circle those items that you really wanted lest Santa or Mom and Dad deliver the ones you could live without?

Dreaming those items would appear under the tree was only half the fun, wasn’t it? The other half was the hunt for the perfect item!

Shopping for the holidays doesn’t have to be any different as an adult. It can still be as much fun to pour over catalog pages, carefully choosing items you’d like to have or those you might want to purchase for a loved one.

Catalog shopping has a lot more to offer than just fun, too. In fact, there are a number of compelling reasons to turn to catalogs for holiday shopping, especially free holiday catalog offerings. These are important to keep an eye out for since many large department stores now charge for their full catalogs. The free ones are the best because they give you ideas without investment, allowing you to fully explore what’s out there to buy without having to plunk cash down. And who doesn’t need to save a few dollars at holiday time?

Some of the best reasons for shopping free catalogs at holiday time include:

? Ease – What can be better than flipping through the pages of a catalog at your leisure to find the right gifts for friends and family?

? Comparison shopping – If you’re savvy at finding the best in free holiday catalogs, you’ll be able to compare what one store offers over another. You might even find some great deals.

? Time savings – Running from store to store to locate the perfect gift can be a real pain and it might not garner the perfect gift. By looking through catalogs, you save the trouble of running around and you might have better luck securing the gift you’d like to obtain.

? Simplicity of helping others make their lists – Let’s face it, shopping for spouses, children and even friends can be a nightmare. What gifts do they really need or want? It takes a mind reader to know. Employ that tactic your parents used at holiday time by handing the kids, your spouse or friends a big, thick catalog just loaded with pictures of neat gifts and let them go to town circling. You might only be able to buy one or two items on the list, but at least you’ll know your choice will be wanted and appreciated.

? Skip the mall – There’s nothing worse at holiday time than fighting the traffic at malls, and that’s figuring you manage to find a parking space. Catalog shopping allows you to avoid the mess entirely.

? Door-to-door service – Catalog orders are delivered right to you or the gift recipient, often in plenty of time for the holidays.

While it might seem like an antiquated idea in this computerized day and age, catalog shopping is a great route to go at holiday time – especially if the catalog happens to be free and the choices are plentiful.

Why You Should Get A Webcam

Web cameras are everywhere now. If you have been on line at all in the past few years, then you have encountered a web camera in some form or another. They range from the mini to video camera size. Web cameras do have value, and are something that you should consider purchasing and setting up. Web cameras often get undo reputations as tools only for the unseemly, but there are far more family friendly reasons for using the web camera than other types of cameras. Though there are many more, here are five reasons to get a web camera for yourself.

First of all, a web camera, set up properly, can be practical. For instance, what if you decide to go out of town for a week or two? You have a number of house plants that you want to keep an eye on, or perhaps even a fish or a pet hamster. By setting up a web camera, you would be able, no matter where you are, to check in on them via a quick trip on line. If the plants look a little droopy, or the automatic fish feeder isn’t working, a quick phone call to a neighbor or friend would be perfect.

A second reason to think about a web camera is for peace of mind. If you work during the day and hire a babysitter, maybe you want to check in during the day, but you can’t just take off from work. Let the sitter know you are setting up a web camera not necessarily because you don’t trust him or her, but because you want to be able to see your baby during the day (and because you do want to make sure the babysitter is doing a good job). You can simply take a quick minute or two at work, log on, and see your child.

Third, maybe you leave your dog or other pet in the back yard during the day while you are at work and the kids are at school. You probably wonder what he does back there all day, or what kind of trouble he gets into during the day. Set up your new web camera to look at part of the back yard. If the dog is digging or getting into something he shouldn’t, you can take care of the problem.

Fourth and this is especially for those who live farther away from family, it is a good way for families to stay close. Grandparents can see their grandbaby napping or playing in her swing. Children can show their aunts and uncles their school project. Even great grand parents, who may not be able to travel, can see the newest addition to the family, a report card, or the great grandchild’s first steps across the living room. Magic moments caught from a distance are, alone, a great reason to think about a web camera.

A fifth reason to consider a web camera is that the sum of the practical reasons, sentimental reasons, and fun reasons to own one all add up to a value well above the financial cost. A web camera can be had for around $30, and with being able to show off the new baby, children’s artwork from school, check on the baby sitter, watch the dog, keep an eye on pets and plants while on vacation, and being able to say “hi” while face to face with a distant friend or far off relative is worth it. Hooking up the camera is easy, and the joy on the faces of relatives or catching that fern before is wilts completely are worth those few dollars and few minutes.

Perhaps you are concerned about having to set up a website to be able to put the images somewhere for people to see. Well, you can certainly do that if you have the expertise, but most of us don’t have the know-how for that. So, when purchasing your web camera, pay attention to what is offered. Because now, several companies are offering buyers a free place to upload the images. This space and the easy instructions will save you the trouble of having to set up and maintain a web server or even a hosted website.
